The dynastic castle of the Counts of Tyrol, who gave their name to the region, dates back to the late 11th century. The South Tyrolean Museum of History – Castle Tyrol shows the history of the land from its origins to the present day. The south palace contains the two Romanesque portals. The chapel dedicated to Saint Pancras is on two floors, with notable Gothic wall paintings. The keep houses an exhibition dedicated to the history of South Tyrol in the 20th century.
